The short film "Stop + Frisk" is LIBERATED PEOPLE Founder, Gbenga Akinnagbe's directorial debut and was originally featured in the Mid-Atlantic TED Talk. Stop+Frisk begins the discourse of NYPD's infamous stop, question, and frisk tactics that have impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands young brown and black men. It asks the hard question, what if the 82 percent of the victims weren't of color and were young white males?
The stop-and-frisk numbers tell much of the story in NYC :
Between January 2004 and June 2012, the NYPD conducted more than 4.4 million stops; of those stopped, 88 percent were completely innocent of any offense.
Although stop-and-frisk disproportionately targets minorities, weapons were seized in only 1 percent of stops of blacks, 1.1 percent of stops of Hispanics, and 1.4 percent of stops of whites.
LIBERATED PEOPLE works to demystify Stop and frisk and begins to call it what it is, terror tactics. We stand in solidarity with all those who have been victims of the traumatic racial profiling and will continue to fight for justice.
